Primary market tickets for A Soldier’s Play are available directly from the venue at the Roundabout Theatre website, and range in price from $59-$299. The show is scheduled to run from December 27, 2019-March 15, 2020.

A Soldier’s Play is scheduled open in Previews on Friday, December 27, with Opening Night set for Tuesday, January 21, 2020. The run is scheduled to end on Sunday, March 15, 2020 at American Airlines Theater. The show will play at 8 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, at 2 p.m. on Saturdays and at 3 p.m. on Sundays. Beginning in February, some night performances will start at 7 p.m. There are about 15 theater talks or lectures sprinkled throughout the performance dates.

A Soldier’s Play is a drama that uses a murder mystery to explore deeper feelings of resentment in African Americans. It is loosely based on Herman Melville’s “Billy Budd,” and is set at the U.S. Army base at Fort Neal, Louisiana.

The show first ran at the Lucille Lortel Theater in New York City, when it opened on November 20, 1981, and was most recently revived by the Second Stage Theater Company off-Broadway in 2005.

Among the key stars in this version are David Alan Grier of the television comedy In Living Color as Waters and Blair Underwood of L.A. Law and other television dramas, as Davenport. The show is directed by Kenny Leon.

Previously known as the Selwyn Theater, the American Airlines Theatre is a 740-seat Broadway theater located at 227 West 42nd Street in New York. The Italian Renaissance theater was built in 1918. The theater was restored in 2000 by the Roundabout theater company as part of the 42ndStreet Redevelopment Project.

Wheelchair/Accessible Options

The American Airlines Theater has elevators to all floors that bring patrons to the Front and Rear Mezzanine sections. There are six transfer seats in the Orchestra (Row B, Seats 101 and 114, Row G, Seats 1 and 2, and Row K, Seats 101 and 116), and two in the Mezzanine Section (Row F, Seats 101, 123).  The theater’s 11 wheelchair accessible seats located in the Orchestra (Row P, Seats 101-106) in the Mezzanine (Row F, Seats 224, 125, 126, 130, 131).

Wheelchair accessible rest rooms are located on the Lobby and Penthouse levels.

A Soldier’s Play is not recommended for children. There are concessions available throughout the theater, and a lost and found is located in the manager’s office.

There are sign-language interpreted shows scheduled for Tuesday, February 18 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, February 22 at 2 p.m. Assistive hearing devices are available at the venue, and on-demand captioning and audio description are available via a device provided at the theater or via smartphone app.
